Joy R.

Acting Up!, Jr. Showcase Players

My childhood was spent in Illinois on a farm. I sang constantly at home, in the classroom with the school music teacher, and in church. I was a very shy child but music helped me overcome this. My teachers at school and church were wonderful in giving me the confidence to perform in front of an audience. I try to pass this experience on to my students.

I received my B.S. Degree in Music Education from Eastern Illinois University.  I first taught music in the public elementary school system in Champaign, Illinois and received my certification to teach in the regular elementary classroom, as well as music.

When we moved to Florida, I began teaching music at Nativity Catholic School and stayed for 16 years. I taught early childhood 4 year olds through 8th grade. I had over 700 students a week. I taught general music classes, hand bells, group keyboarding, beginner and advanced bands, recorders, had a select chorus, and directed musicals. Each year I directed a Christmas musical with hundreds of students. I also sang solos for weddings and funerals in the church and directed the children's choir with an average of 100 children for many years. I directed the adult choir for one year. I sang with the Nativity Choir in Italy at St. Peter's Basilica and sang a solo part at St. Ignatius in Rome.

I have twice been selected for Who's Who Among America's Teachers. I was also nominated for the National Catholic Educators Association Distinguished Teacher Award. I have published an article in "Today's Liturgy for Children."

I have been directing musicals at Music Showcase/FAOPA since February 2003.

I love children and enjoy seeing them be successful. Musical theatre helps with their social skills, confidence, and musical ability. It is my privilege to work with so many talented students.
